Theme: Spring and Nursery Rhymes
We are still waiting for spring to really come around and show us its warmth and colors. I think in a few more weeks the world will brilliantly explode with the colors and sounds of spring. Trees are just beginning to bud and the world is slowly waking up from its winter slumber. We will continue exploring spring through our selected stories and crafts this week.
Along with our exploration of spring, we will begin to listen to and learn nursery rhymes. April is the Month of the Young Child; at Turtle Creek we have traditionally spent this month focused on nursery rhymes. Learning nursery rhymes is not only a literary activity, but it involves both speech and music and movement. The four nursery rhymes we will be working on throughout the month are: Ring Around the Roses, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Row/Row your Boat and Itsy Bitsy Spider.
There are many versions of Ring Around the Rosies but we have selected:
Ring A Ring a Rosies
A pocket full of posies
Atishoo, Atishoo
We all fall down.
We will use the you tube video “Ring A Ring O’ Roses-Activity Song with Singalong Lyrics” (1:21)
We will show the children the youtube video “Twinkle TwinkleLittle Star 7 More/Kids Songs/ Super Simple Star” (1:02)
Row, Row Row your boat will be introduced with the youtubevideo of “Row/Row Your Boat/Learn with Little Baby Bum” (2:18)
Finally, “Itsy Bitsy Spider Song for Children” will be the youtube video for this nursery rhyme. (1:58)
We include the youtube videos because there are so many. You can reinforce what we are showing in class.
We hope that children will learn the lyrics through the music and movement. If all goes as planned, we may bring out the rhythm sticks for them to begin to tap to the beat of the music. At the end of April, we hope to present some of the nursery rhymes to another class and maybe it will be part of the end-of-the-year performance!
