Theme: Spring time, Plants, the letter Qq and number review
It’s spring, but it sure doesn’t feel like it lately. Warmer weather is on its way. This week lends itself to the exploration of plants which may extend two weeks since there is so much to learn about plants.
Science:
In our exploration of plants including planting flowers, students will come to learn about:
- the different parts of a plant and label: root, leaf, stem, and flower
- the life cycle of a plant from seeds, to sprout, to mature plant and finally flower.
- the parts of the plant we eat – root, stems, leaves and seeds
- keeping a plant journal as part of science observation
- what plants need to survive – sunlight, soil, and water
Students will be given a short colorful book All About Plants which they will “read” and be able to identify our known sight words throughout this informative book.
We will conduct a science experiment on how plants “drink.” We will use celery stalks with leaves and place stalks in containers with water that is colored with food coloring. We will make observations about what happens to the color of the leaves. You can extend this activity at home by purchasing white flowers and putting one of them in colored water and watch the petals change colors.
On warmer days, we will take nature walks with clip boards and “Signs of Spring Scavenger Hunt” attached. We will notice more signs of spring as the weather warms. Keen observation is the fundamental science skill.
Phonics:
The letter Qq will be introduced. Students will practice how to correctly form this letter. It’s a little tricky because some confuse the formation of “p” with “q.” We will create a Qq Word Wall list and notice how q is always paired with the letter ‘u.”
Math:
We will continue working on addition +1 and +2 to numbers as well as reviewing numbers 1-20.
Literature:
- Quick as a Cricket by Audrey Wood
- Little Quack by Lauren Thompson
- The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carle
- The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle
- The Recess Queen by Alexis O’Neill
- The Quilt Maker’s Gift by Jeff Brubeau
- My Garden by Kevin Henkes
- From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons
- Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert
Reminders:
Please bring spring clothes to swap out the winter clothing your child has in his/her cubby
The Art Festival/Spring Fling will be held on Thursday, April 7th from 5:00-6:30. The children’s art will be on display, as well as crafts to make and an ice cream truck to enjoy. This is our only Open House of the season so please bring your friends and neighbors and introduce them to our wonderful school.
As the weather warms, please send in extra water for your child.
