I hope this new week finds everyone happy and healthy. I’ve got a lot of fun and exciting things planned for the students and am hoping that all are here to enjoy.
Morning Work/Everyday Tasks:
As always, our mornings will start with the daily Do Now. This week will consist of Analogy Cut Outs/Glue, Letter/Sound Glue On, Alphabet Dot Letters and Proper Letter Writing/Spacing on lined sheets and Calendar & Weather Charts. Once those tasks are completed the class will join together and recite the Pledge of Allegiance, sing the Days of the Week & Months of the Year songs and participate in a little morning music & movement activity! I introduced a silly one to the class on Friday afternoon. Please ask them about Tootie Ta!!
Math: (+ a special treat!)
We will be working daily on counting, writing and addition in the EarlyBird workbook.
** This week I will introduce “A Bag of Math Fun” – It will be the first of many to come! The bag contents will incorporate a piece of literature, The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins, and some fun and exciting activities. It is a story about two children who are presented with 12 cookies to share. But each time the doorbell rings, they have to divide the cookies into smaller and smaller portions. The children will learn about division, friendship, and sharing while reading the book and completing some fun activities. Of course I cannot let the mention of chocolate chip cookies go unnoticed The class will also bake some chocolate chip cookies which we will enjoy during our Valentine Party when we celebrate on Friday! Shhhh, the baking is a surprise, so please don’t tell…
Letters:
As promised, the letter we will focus on this week will be the letter /Xx/. The children will learn about this eXtraordinary letter thru literature (The Xylophone for X-Ray Fish by Lisa Charlesworth and Jessica’s X-Ray by Pat Zonta), writing (brainstorming and writing words that begin with the letter /Xx/), art (colorful xylophone and creating an x-ray of their hand/arm using paper, paint, glue and Q-Tips) and lastly with the aid of a visual (I will show the students some real life x-rays and explain what, how, why & who). Should be an interesting conversation!!
Phonics:
Students will continue sounding out, listening and writing the beginning, middle and ending letters of the words in the spaces provided. They will also decode using their color/number charts as a resource. Most of this work is done independently. The children are making great strides and progress with minimal help/guidance from me. Everyone is becoming the independent worker I knew they would be…They are as proud of themselves as I am! The Kinder’s are progressing nicely.
Social Studies:
This week the children will learn a few facts about the Cardinal, also known as the Winter Bird and will also do two related art projects.
** males are a brilliant red color, rumor has it if you see a female you will receive good news/positive things will happen. Cardinals are granivorous animals. Meaning they mostly eat seeds, they have cone shaped beaks designed to crack open the hull on seeds & shells on nuts. Usually the first bird to visit the feeder in the AM & the last to visit in the PM. They sing for their food. During their courtship it looks like they are kissing, but it is the male feeding the female. Cardinals are easy to see in the snow. Their sounds sound like they are saying, “birdie, birdie, birdie” or “cheer, cheer, cheer”. They have a 3-year life span, they battle with reflections in windows and mirrors and molt 1x/year. The cardinal is bald for a few weeks afterwards. Is a popular mascot and the state bird 7x’s (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia & West Virginia). The children will also make pine cone birdfeeders for their feathered friends as well as a handprint cardinal.
