Morning Work/Everyday Tasks:
ThisweekthemorningDoNow’swill once againbemathoriented. Thestudents will have pages with counting, recognizing numbers, number concepts, working with numbers and dot to dot pages. As usual, the daily morning tasks will be calendar, weather chart, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, singing a patriotic song as well as singing The Days of the Week and The Months of the Year songs. A brief morning music and movement exercise will bridge them into their day of learning
Math:
Math work this week will be done with pages from the Lollipop Logic workbook. Supplemental pages will be introduced.
Letters:
Last week we had so much fun with the letter /Uu/, that we didn’t have any time to learn about the letter /Xx/. We will push that letter off to next week…Thisweekwewillbelearningtheletters /Yy/ and /Zz/!Please be sure to check the black folders for all the correlating work that will be sent home. Each day this week the children will be exploring letters using fun & exciting approaches; popcorn kernels, using Q-Tips to paint over letters, using tweezers to place colored pompoms into the color correct bottle caps and also using rice to help trace the way to proper letter formation.
Phonics:
We will continue work in class and at home in the Red Phonics workbook. I will assign 1 page for HW Monday-Thursday. Please encourage your child to read/complete these pages on their own as best as possible. It is important that they know that you (& I) are there for them when they struggle and are in need of a helping hand. But also, that they know each struggle wont last forever. The harder they work at it the easier it will become. During class, after directions are given, most of this work is done independently. The children are working very hard and they are taking real pride in their work!
Social Studies:
Groundhog Day is February 2. This is the day when we ask are we in for six more weeks of Winter? Only a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil knows for sure. Each year on Groundhog Day, people flock to Gobbler’s Knob in Pauxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to await the forecast of the local rodent celebrity. Legend has it if Phil sees his shadow on February 2, the winter chill will continue. Oddly, if the weather is cloudy and he doesn’t see his shadow, we can expect warmer temperatures and an early spring…I for one am hoping for the early spring option. I’ve had enough of this cold weather!!
