Our Theme: Diversity

Dear Pre- K Families,
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is coming up on the 18th of January. I thought it was appropriate to start our diversity unit in part to honor his memory and legacy, PEACE & UNITY. This will help our children understand that they too can have a part in helping our world be a kinder and a more tolerant place. The next two weeks will consist of the same theme, diversity and unity. We will also introduce the letter Hh and the number 11.

Literature:

The Color of Us: Karen Katz
Hare Are My Hands: Bill Martin Jr. & John Archambault
All Are Welcome: Alexandra Penfold
A Lesson For Martin Luther King Jr.: Denise Patrick
SAME, SAME but DIFFERENT: Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw
It’s Okay To Be Different: Todd Par
We Are All Alike We Are All Different: The Cheltenham Elementary School Kindergarten
Together: George Ella Lyon
WHOEVER YOUR ARE: Meme Fox

Activities

Activities will include filling in the letter H with hearts ♥ and creating our Hh word list. This week we will be using paint as a learning tool. We will be painting a mural that will have a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., touch. We will be reading some wonderful books that will help us delve into a discussion of diversity. We are going to use a brown egg and a white egg as metaphors to show that on the outside we might look different but inside we are the same. We will also review numbers learned to date and introduce the number 11 which will begin our formal learning of teen numbers. Teen numbers present a challenge for most children since you hear the second number and not the first.

Reminders

School will be closed January 18 in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Report cards are scheduled for the end of January.
Wishing you a wonderful week!
