As of 9:30 Sunday evening, spring is only 11 days 2 hours 27 minutes away; I love it when the groundhog is right! We narrowly missed a blizzard Friday evening with the front well off our New Jersey coast and instead enjoyed mild weather the second half of the weekend. Monday is forecast to be a winner so get out and enjoy the early spring-like weather. I’m still holding out for at least one snowstorm. Our week is shaping up to be a very busy one; the class will explore a new map in geography, be introduced to a new reader, and practice our addition math skills.
In our Being a Writer Series we will explore feelings. The students this week will write about a time they felt happy, sad, frustrated, or angry. As always we will use a good piece of literature to springboard into the writing. The expectation is 2 – 3 sentences, displaying capital letters at the beginning of sentences, use of the word wall, and punctuation at the end of each sentence. Word wall words to date are; I, see, the, a, like, of, to, and, he, is, she, have, can, some, they, get, make, me, on, very, when. These words should be used correctly in their writing and will be sent home for practice this week. In addition, children should learn the correct spelling for the words they use often in their writing. The list will be different for each student depending on their word choice but the previous list is the ones I keep them accountable for.
Our reading groups will be exploring new readers. The objectives include learned phonics skills, quotation marks, and combined use of picture cues and previous knowledge, to makes sense of the words in the story. Please encourage your child to read every night!
In geography, we enter week 7. This week we will learn about a map grid. A grid is a series of lines that create a square. We will explore Fun Tine at the Zoo and learn coordinate pairs. The students really enjoy the time we spend each day learning these learned skills. Continue to discuss and review these skills at home.
In math, we will extend our understanding of addition with the concept of doubles plus one. For larger more challenging addition sentences a strategy is to use the doubles facts to help with mental math. Example: 6 + 7 = well I know that 6 + 6 = 12 and seven is one more, so 6 + 7= must equal 13. Homework this week will include skill and drill pages to reinforce these concepts. We’ll also be working on critical thinking packet and an addition/ subtraction word problem packet. The stress is on using what you know to solve the problem. That includes pictures!
For the remainder of the month of March, the class will enjoy reading and sharing or favorite Dr. Seuss books. Last week the kindergarten class read to the pre-k and to the 3’s. Everyone had a fun time. WE are planning to extend our reading prowess next week to the 2’s and repeat with the 3’s as we continue to improve our amazing reading skills. The class will plan and enjoy our own week of silly celebrations!
Thank you for our continued support at home. Almost happy spring!
