Kindergarten Highlights October 21, 2019 Reported by Ms. Krachie,

Bats, spiders and skeletons Oh! MY! Our kindergarten room is beginning to look amazing with all the cool decorations for Halloween and our reports about spiders. This week we will swoop and soar as we learn about bats! We discovered that after learning about spiders that they are not as scary as we once thought them to be. In fact, we learned that the opposite is true. Through the literature selected and a new assignment we will discover the same thing about bats. We will then move onto skeletons just in time for our Halloween celebration. Over the next several weeks we will explore the body’s five systems and get an up-close view of the brain, heart, and eye as well as cells, blood and pathogens. The skeletal system includes all the bones of the body plus the joints where they attach to each other. The skeleton protects our internal organs, provides a framework that allows us to stand upright and move, it stores minerals that our body needs to function properly, and produces red blood cells. The objective is to learn the function of the bones that make up our skeletal system and to name some of the major parts of our body. In math, we will learn how to properly form and spell the number 6, review the numbers previously learned, and continue with our introduction to addition. We will also introduce estimation skills using Halloween treats and explore size, estimation and descriptive words in our pumpkin study. We are all excited about Halloween next Thursday and the activities that will be going on in our room. If you have not had the chance to sign up for the class party, the list is available in our room by the sign-in book. Please look for more information about the school-wide parade and planned activities as we get closer to Halloween. This week the students will begin the writing program series. The writing begins with telling stories (orally) as well as drawing pictures that tell stories. As students become familiar with concepts of print, they begin to write symbols and eventually letters to represent sounds. To get practice writing during their elementary school years, students need to really, really want to write. All instruction in the writing process, craft, and skills grows out of the need to tap into students’ desire to express themselves and to be understood. The Being A Writer Series uses read-alouds of exemplary writing to stimulate the students’ imagination and fuel their motivation to write. Reading about professional authors helps students learn that the creative process can be gloriously messy and that writers write to satisfy themselves first! Reminder for students:
