Kindergarten Highlights October 7, 2019
It’s only the seventh day of October and already it has been a busy month. Fall is bursting with so many exciting things to explore and learn. With Sandy Hook behind us, we sail on to learn about the mysteries of autumn, bats and spiders, and the voyage of Christopher Columbus. This week we will continue with our reading comprehension series. In the Making Meaning series we will continue to build a reading community, develop good listening skills, answer questions to understand a story, and begin to make text – to – self connections. We will practice “turn to your partner”. Talking to their partner gives everyone a chance to talk about what they are learning from the story. It also helps with listening skills and accepting others opinions. The book is Cat’s Colors by Jane Cabrera. In the story a cat describes ten different colors and tells which one is his favorite. In Math this week we will develop an understanding of position words, opposites, simple patterns, and begin looking at characteristics that allow us to sort items into groups. We will share a delightful story about Grandma’s buttons and using the concepts of shape, color, and size to sort them in different ways. We will also take a look at some of the many version of the childhood classic Goldilocks, to coincide with the featured letter of the week. To date we have formally introduced /Oo/, /Cc/, and this week will introduce letter /Gg/. When “c” or “g” is followed by “e, I, or y,” it usually has the soft sound of “s” or “j.”E.g.: city, cent, gem, and gym. This week in social studies we will discuss the voyage of Columbus. In science we will begin to learn about the wonderful life and benefit of spiders! We are only afraid of what we don’t know or understand. A report will be assigned on spiders and is due Tuesday October 15th. It’s going to be a busy week! Reminder, picture day is Tuesday!Reminder for students:
