Kindergarten Highlights September 23, 2019 Reported by Ms. Krachie
Welcome fall!
We have “O”fficially been in school for 10 days. I am looking forward to back-to-school night to share all the learning activities we have undertaken in that time. We have explored and learned how to use materials in our room. Participated in morning meetings, learned how to properly form number 1-2, and practiced the two sounds of letter Cc, introduced color words, primary and secondary colors as an introduction to higher level vocabulary and thinking. Oh, and shared over 15 awesome pieces of literature! We have begun introducing letters, letter sounds, and spelling rules as they apply; stressing fine motor and handwriting as well. To date we have formally introduced /Cc/, and this week will introduce letter /Oo/ both long and short sounds. The class will enjoy literature selected to coincide with our letter of the week. We will enjoy playing games as well that begin with Oo; enjoying Operation and OSMO Monsters on the I-Pad. Outdoor we will revisit the games we enjoyed playing last week and learn some new ones as well. The class will begin to explore the oceans of the world, the globe, and learn about some interesting animals that call the ocean home. We will read several books that focus on the amazing animals that live in our oceans, learn the names of the larger bodies of water that make up over 70% of our planet, and learn about the layers that exist below the sunlight layer we enjoy so much when we play at the beach. Literature will consist of non-fiction science readers which we will utilize to discuss the attributes that distinguish ocean life from other creatures in nature. Our class is going on a field trip to Sandy Hook October 4th; more details to follow. We began updating our own calendar and weather chart each morning. The calendar is the first tool that the children learn that keeps track of time, simply how many days have gone by. We use it in the classroom to review days of the week, counting, and practice writing numbers learned. If you have a calendar visible at home remember to ask these simple questions to reinforce learning. We will review the number one and introduce number two, as we continue to and develop the concepts of these numbers and their relationships as well. The introduction of formal reading groups is in the plans for this week. Time permitting the students may have nightly reading assignments as well. I need to see how the first week goes before assigning reading partners and selecting the level of reading material. Thanks for your support and patience. From the Teacher’s Desk
