Hello Pre-K Families,
I hope you all had a great weekend! This week we will be focusing on Mother’s Day and Math. We will be reading stories about Moms and creating our own. We read The Mommy Book by Todd Park today and they loved it. They immediately started to make text-to-self connections and start a discussion.
In our classroom I believe in teaching Math across the curriculum. Since September we have learned math weaving it into language arts, music, art and physical activity. For example, they might learn math through stories and songs that include counting, numbers, and language of math; the Dr.Seuss classic (which is a class favorite), One Fish, Two Fish, red Fish, Blue Fish is one fun example! This type of integrated approach has been used successfully as a way to teach young children to read, so it makes sense that the same approach may enhance children’s understanding of math.
Although I will always integrate math with the other subjects in school, this week and for the rest of the school year, we will be focusing and continue growing our “number sense”, language of math, measurement, geometry and spatial relations. At this point most students should demonstrate an ability to identify the numbers 0-20. Please continue to work at home on number recognition and practicing math. For example, they can count their food items at snack time, or practice simple addition and subtraction using small toys and blocks.
As always, I am looking forward to another amazing week of learning and growing! We are looking forward to our Mother’s Day Tea on Wednesday at 10am…hope to see you there!
See you tomorrow,
Mrs.M
