Kindergarten Highlights
February 25, 2019
The end of this week marks the beginning of a new month. Perhaps as parents of older siblings you are already aware how fast the remainder of the year flies by. We celebrate Dr. Seuss and the long awaited arrival of spring and look forward to the celebrations of Easter and Passover in the month of April. The children have come such a long way since the first day back in September; I’m so proud of their progress. However, I feel a greater urgency with the passing of time to have their mastery of skills and concepts be commensurate with their potential. I’m asking that, as a team, we work together over the next three months to help our children reach their full potential. We are a classroom of readers, writers, thinkers, and friends. I push because I know they possess the skills and ability to explode and achieve more. The skills necessary for success, both current and future, only require ten minutes a night. Hopefully, you have placed the readers that I have sent home in a spot where you child can pick them up and just read with your child. Nothing brings more joy to a student then to realize the once difficult reader is now so simple to decode. Engaging in spelling or math can be effortless as well. Enjoy discussing how many ways 10 can be “made” or how quickly they can solve mental math sentences that they have learned, such as plus 0, plus 1, and counting up in your head plus 2 and 3. There are 24 hours in a day, 10 of which they are sleeping, 6 attending TCLA, several hours for sports and activities (2-4), which leaves four hours per day for meals and other events. Four hours to find 10 minutes to listen as they read or interact as they solve computations. Let’s celebrate their achievement and pledge to spend 10 minutes a night and together we we will help our children develop the cognitive skills that will exceed expectations. This last week of February we will enjoy learning about Abraham Lincoln, introduce the concept of money and its value, and introduce our study of space and of course Dr. Seuss. The students will enjoy the laughter and silly verse in the most loved of books by this wonderful children’s author. Please share with your child if you have a special moment or book written by Theodore Geisel. Mine are Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now! and Go, Dog, Go one of the I Can Read Seuss Beginner Book series. During the month of March I tend to shift gears a bit and spend a lot of time on math and science. The class has been working diligently on becoming authors and readers; the focus is now on honing math concepts. We will continue to read and write daily but the work coming home will be more mathematical. Parent – teacher conferences will take place later on in March. They will be held during the school day while classes are in session. Please be on the lookout in the next week or so for a sign- up sheet.Categorised in: Ms. Krachie
