January 22, 2019 4:15 pm Kindergarten Highlights January 22, 2019   BRRR! Welcome to weather from the Arctic. The cold air is refreshingly clean and crisp.  It should leave us by midweek when we return to more seasonal temperatures; until then, dress warmly and hydrate. Hopefully, you had the opportunity to enjoy the longer holiday weekend.  The class enjoyed our unit on courage and the discussions we had about Martin Luther King, Jr. I am looking forward to the students continuing to show courage and kindness as we enter the latter and perhaps more challenging part of our school year. We will introduce new skills to the class with this week along with the reader. The new booklet delves into long vowels and magic (silent) –e. In four letter consonant-vowel-consonant-e words, the –e at the end is silent, instead e tells the first vowel to say its name. Examples; Short long pin pine cap cape cub cube The booklet also introduces quotation marks.  As a whole class we will discuss the use of quotation marks and how they show who, in written text, is doing the talking. Please help by discussing and pointing out these new skills at home by sharing their usage in your daily life. In math we are going to revisit ordinals and sequence of events. These skills not only help by placing order in mathematical terms but in literary too.  They help young children apply reason to our fast paced environment. The Singapore Math workbooks will be sent home for homework. Enjoy looking at the work we have already done and support the current work as well. Please have your child place the workbook back in his/her backpack when finished as we will refer to them in class as well. I am pleased with the ability of the students to tell time to the hour.  This week we will introduce time to the half hour. We will be talking about the position of the hands on the clock. The minute hand is pointing straight down at the 6, please stress the position of the hour hand, as it will be between two numbers on the face of the analog clock. The hour is always the smaller of the two numbers. Social Studies and science this week revolves around our Multicultural presentation on Thursday evening.  The students will be preparing and practicing in class for our segment on the continents. I ask that you please assist in helping them read and become familiar with the facts and presentation they have helped script. Hopefully, they will come home as early as Tuesday evening. Our class will be performing at 6:30 pm sharp. Hope that all is well and that the 2019 is off to a great start. Thank you for your continued support at home.  See you Thursday. Let me know if you will be bringing a dish for that evening from a country that reflects your heritage.
