December 18, 2018 3:54 pm Kindergarten Highlights Week of December 17, 2018 Reported by Ms. Krachie   Winter will begin this year at exactly 5:23 pm EST on Friday December 21st. The winter solstice is the day with the fewest hours of sunlight in the whole year on the Northern Hemisphere.  A funny thought, in the Southern Hemisphere, the winter solstice occurs around June 20 or 21st.  I’m glad ours is now because we have the bright lights and happy times with all the festive holidays in December. I’m proud to report that the entire class has met a milestone; we are a room of readers.  Desire, hard work, and repetition have helped us reach that goal. Thank you for your assistance at home and for understanding how important you are in the process. It only takes 10 minutes a night and positive reinforcement.  The class will complete current readers and be assigned a new one that they can practice over the winter break. We are introducing new skills that will continue to allow them to decode increasingly more challenging texts and begin to add to their strategies for spelling and decoding new words.  Skill include; ay, says “A”, digraphs, consonants that can be individually heard but blend for a new sound like fr, dr, gr, and ow & ou say ouch. This week in our writing series we will share Lunch by Denise Fleming. We will use the book to springboard into our writing about foods we like. We will think-pair-share with our partner and use mental visualization to help us get ideas for our story. In the Making Meaning we will use a Tomie dePaola book entitled Charlie Needs a New Cloak to practice retelling in order to remember the sequence of events and help with understanding and comprehension. We continue to practice penmanship writing both letters and numbers.  This week’s letter is Tt and review of the numbers 11 – 20. Once letters and / or numbers have been introduced, it is the responsibility of the students to correctly form the above correctly. To date we have received direct instruction on numbers 1 to 20 and the letters Cc, Oo, Gg, Dd, Aa, Ss, Ll, Ii, and Tt. In Math we will review greater than / less than and the symbol that is associated with those terms. Continue to review at home until mastery is demonstrated.  The class displayed understanding in school but the golden rule is to review every four days, every four weeks, and every four months to ensure mastery and to move the information into long term memory. We will also enjoy a few holiday worksheets as well. We continue to use what we know to solve word problems. In science we will visit the remaining four senses; hearing, touch, smell along with taste.  The class really enjoyed seeing the sheep brain up close and learning about the major parts and their jobs.  They have learned a lot about the human body, and I am very proud of their interest in the material and their excitement about what they have learned. Our classroom holiday party will be on Thursday afternoon.  We are going to have a Grinch party and watch the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  Nicolette’s Mom will be in touch as far as needed items food wish, but know we are keeping it simple.   We wish you all the best this holiday season and wish you happiness, health and peace in the New Year! We will see you back on January 2nd. Have a joyful and relaxing holiday with your family.
