November 12, 2018 9:53 pm Kindergarten Class Newsletter November 12, 2018 Reported by Ms. K   We ended October with a beautiful day and fun festivities. We began November the exact same way! The class had the pleasure of celebrating Diwali, the festival of lights: which celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. With the time change we can all use more light. We painted Dia, made rangoli, and tasted some yummy treats. Special thanks to Ishana’s brother Samay, her sister Ishika, and to Mrs. Patel for their willingness to spend the afternoon celebrating with us! In math we will continue to explore addition.  This week the concept of one more and one less will be introduced.  We will use the terms “smaller than” and “greater than” when we compare numbers. Example, six is greater than five; it is one more. Four is smaller than five; it is one less. We’ll continue with our writing and comprehension series. Our writing series will invite students to think about things they might write about as they listen to the story. This week we will be using the story Round Is A Mooncake for our writing piece. A little girl observes shapes all around her. It is the sister story to Red Is A Dragon, the book we used to illustrate and label things in our lives that are the colors of the rainbow.  In Making Meaning we will continue to make text – to – text connections and answer questions to understand a story.  We will also begin to informally identify important ideas in stories. Social studies this week and next will resolve around Thanksgiving: The First Thanksgiving and modern day.  We will share the things we are thankful for and discuss the importance of thinking of others. Don’t forget the school wide food collection; it’s an easy way of giving back to others in need. In science we move on to the heart and circulatory system. The class will get their exercise pretending to be red blood cells moving through the body moving to the heart, lungs, and arms and legs. Sorry for the delay in sending home this retelling activity. The laminator is having technical difficulty. It will be on the way shortly. (The class will also be sharing an adorable Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat read along.  We hope you enjoy the story and applaud as your child retells the story using the story pieces.) Thank you again for your continued support at home. Please remember to sign up for conferences next week. The sign-up will be available Monday afternoon.  November 19th and 20th are one session days. Dismissal will be at 12:00 pm. Aftercare will be available until 5 pm. Please let Mrs. V know if your child will be staying and pack a lunch for them if they are. School will be in session Monday to Wednesday the week of Thanksgiving. We will resume regular schedule the week of November 26th.
