October 29, 2018 3:35 pm Kindergarten Class Newsletter October 29, 2018 Reported by Ms. K   Bats, spiders and skeletons… Oh MY!  Our kindergarten room looks amazing with all the cool decorations, spiders, and projects about bats.  We discovered that after learning about bats and spiders that they are not as scary as we once thought them to be.  In fact, we learned that the opposite is true.  This week we will move onto skeletons as we begin our study of the human body.  In the next few weeks we will explore the body’s five systems and get an up close view of the brain, heart, and eye as well as cells, blood and pathogens. The skeletal system includes all the bones of the body plus the joints where they attach to each other.  The skeleton protects our internal organs, provides a framework that allows us to stand up right and move; it stores minerals that our body needs to function properly and produces red blood cells. The objective is to learn the function of the bones that make up our skeletal system and to name some of the major parts of our body. In math we will begin to explore addition.  We will introduce the terminology, the signs, and the concept of joining two numbers together. We’ll be sending home spider addition doubles cards to practice memorizing at home. Please help reinforce this new concept at home by asking simple question using ordinary household items or Halloween candy. We will be using our classroom pumpkin to estimate the number of seeds. We’ll discuss ways to count and begin to learn estimation skills. We’ll continue with our writing and comprehension series. Our writing series will invite students to think about things they might write about as they listen to the story. In Making Meaning we will continue to make text – to – text connection and answer question to understand a story.  We will also begin to identify important ideas in stories. We will experiment with candy corns in science as we teach young children how to develop a hypothesis, conduct an experiment, and then revise our hypothesis as we work to find out which common household liquids will dissolve candy corn. We are all excited about Halloween on Wednesday and the activities that will be going on in our room.  Thank you for signing up for a treat on the class list. I will be sending a copy home Monday as a reminder. Please plan for 8 to 10 students to cover classmates, teachers, and our HS guests. Our Halloween parade will be held at 10:45a.m. on Wednesday. Meet us outside along the driveway as your children parade around the school twice in their costumes. Our party will be held immediately after the parade. You can send your children in their costumes. If they are not comfortable wearing it all day, send in a change of clothes that they will be able to change into after the party. If you are sending in any items to eat, every treat should be nut free. The class will also be sharing an adorable Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat read along.  We hope you enjoy the story and applaud as your child retells the story using the story pieces.   Thank you again for your continued support at home.
