Welcome to Mid-October! I think that the calendar and the weather are finally in sync. The cooler temperatures are putting us in the mood for fall activities. In the classroom, we are busy getting ready for Halloween. We begin the preparations by learning all about bats. I hope you enjoy learning about these beneficial mammals along with your child. We will also explore spiders and skeletons this week and into next. No holiday decoration is complete without these three spooky creatures added. The goal is to eliminate fear and misunderstanding about these mammals and arachnids and highlight their usefulness to plants, people, and the environment.
On Monday this week we will be attending a Fit 4 Kids assembly in school. The presenter will be discussing healthy eating and the importance of exercise. The PTO has generously donated pumpkins so on Wednesday we will go pumpkin picking in the TCLA patch.
Our Making Meaning Series this week allows us to practice taking turns answering questions with our think-pair-and share partner. We will practice making text-to-text connection to enjoy and understand a story. The book, Flower Garden by Eve Bunting, is one of my favorites. It is a story about a young girl who plants some flowers for a special gift. We enter unit 2 in the Being A Writer Series. During this ten week unit, the students generate ideas through hearing and discussing books, visualizing, observing the world around them, and making lists. They rehearse their writing by telling their stories orally and then explore writing letters, words, and sentences. They learn to share ideas and appreciate one another’s ideas and writing. We begin with City Signs by Zoran Milich, instead of using words to tell a story, this book uses words to label things in the world.
We will continue with reading groups this week as well. The class has been placed into three groups at this time. Each group will be assigned the level that best matches current skill and reading objective. Please spend five to ten minutes a night reviewing letters sounds and short vowel sounds as introduced. Enjoy sharing in their triumphs as they begin to make sense of printed text; applaud their level of success in reading.
In math we continue reviewing number words. Enjoy playing the Haunted Number Game that will be sent home later in the week. We will review simple patterns and introduce more complex AAB, ABB, and ABC patterns as well. Please reinforce the terminology and labeling of the patterns.
Science will revolve around bats and the bat reports due Wednesday. We will also learn a bit about pumpkins to coincide with pumpkin picking. We plan on introducing and learning about spiders latter on in the week and into next week.
Join us on October 24th by wearing pink for Breast Cancer Awareness month.
October is also Fire Safety Awareness month. It’s a good time to check your batteries in your detectors and to make a family plan in the event of an emergency. Plan a meeting place outside the home and talk about fire safety in the home. We will touch on these topics in school as well. I’m hope we get a visit from the fire department too!
Remember to pack a healthy lunch, snack, and refillable water bottle.
Please check folders and have your child be responsible for their return to school daily.
