Kindergarten Class Newsletter

It’s finally feels like autumn as we welcome the cooler temperatures and the shorter days. We have a lot happening this week in kindergarten in addition to the field trip on Friday to Sandy Hook. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule last week to attend Back-to-School night. I hope it answered your questions as to what our day looks like and the types of activities that occur to help instill a love of learning and build confidence in our children.
This week we will continue with our reading comprehension and writing series. In “Being A Writer” we will hear and discuss good writing and draw and write about what we like about school. In the “Making Meaning” series we will continue to build a reading community, develop good listening skills, answer questions to understand a story, and begin to make text – to – self connections. We will also take a look at some of the many version of the childhood classic Goldilocks to coincide with the featured letter of the week.
We will begin introducing letters, letter sounds, and spelling rules as they apply stressing fine motor skills and handwriting as well. To date we have formally introduced /Oo/, /Cc/, and this week will introduce letter /Gg/. When “c” or “g” is followed by “e, I, or y,” it usually has the soft sound of “s” or “j.”E.g.: city, cent, gem, and gym.
In math we will begin to update our own calendar and weather chart each morning. The calendar is the first tool that the children learn that keeps track of time by noting how many days have gone by. We use it in the classroom to review days of the week, count, and practice writing numbers learned. If you have a calendar visible at home remember to ask these simple questions to reinforce learning. We will also begin sequencing by looking at a group of illustrations to determine relationship before selecting what comes next. This is an introduction to our logic workbooks. We’ll practice number writing for 7 &8.
Our afternoons will be learning more about the ocean and the creatures that make it their home. This week we will learn about sharks, dolphins and whales. Please read the booklets that come home this week as an assignment. I have written questions in the text to help demonstrate how you can ask questions before, during, and after reading.
The introduction of formal reading groups is in the plans for this week. Time permitting, the students may have nightly reading assignments as well. I need to see how the first week goes as far as selected level of reading material. Thanks for your support.
Reminder for students:
- Bring your folder to school everyday
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes
- Bring a healthy lunch and snack with 2 drinks
From the Teacher’s Desk
Everyone had fun at the farm on Friday.
Sandy Hook information to be sent later in week. _ Wear your neon green Turtle Creek T-Shirt that day. All students going on the trip must arrive by 9:00 am in order to depart on time. The bus will not wait for late students; we have a scheduled workshop that begins promptly at 10:00 am there. Furthermore, pack a labeled lunch with ONLY disposable items in a paper or plastic bag. Do not pack a lunch in your child’s lunch box. Include an extra plastic bag so your child can collect seashells.
