Kindergarten Highlights
September 24, 2018
We have been in school for nine wonderful days. I am looking forward to Back-to-School night to share with you all the learning activities we have undertaken so far this year. We have explored and learned how to use materials in our room, participated in morning meetings, learned how to properly form number 1-5, practiced the two sounds of letter Cc, used Beanie Babies to explore ordinal numbers, introduced color words, and made recycled paper and catapults as an introduction to higher level vocabulary and thinking. Oh, and shared over 15 awesome pieces of literature!
We will continue working on our classroom routines and the class rules as well as getting acquainted with one another over the next few weeks. We will play musical chairs this week to help us remember our classmates’ names and participate in literacy activities that develop confidence. We will discuss the fall season and learn about the role of earth’s revolution in the phenomenon. It is shaping up to be another productive week in kindergarten!
This week the students will begin the writing program series, Being A Writer.
For young students, writing begins with telling stories and drawing pictures that tell stories. As they become familiar with concepts of print, children begin to write symbols and eventually letters (words) to represent sounds. The kindergarten lessons in the Being a Writer program reflect this developmental process. In unit 1, the students tell stories and draw freely as they learn that words (and later sentences) on the page communicate meaning. The stories this week will focus on something they can do. We explain to the students that we will become community of writers who like to write and who help each other become stronger writers.
In math this week we will continue with the proper formation of number 6 – 10 as well as review of previous numbers introduced. We will continue to practice with ordinals, review shapes, and introduce skills where thinking about more than one variable is necessary to solve problems. We will solve four-square Sudoku and recognize and name coins: penny and nickel.
In the afternoons this week, we will begin our study of the ocean in preparation for our trip to Sandy Hook. We will read several books that focus on the amazing animals that live in our oceans, learn the names of the larger bodies of water that make up over 70% of our planet, and learn about the layers that exist below the sunlight layer. We will read and discuss the attributes that distinguish ocean life from other creatures in nature.
Reminder for students:
- Bring your folder to school everyday
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes
- Bring a healthy lunch and snack with 2 drinks ( don’t forget your refillable water bottle)
