Kindergarten Highlights
It’s finally here: the first day of kindergarten. Welcome students, parents, and families. We are about to embark on an awesome journey together. I am looking forward to working with your children and getting to know not only them but your family as well. It was nice meeting those of you who were able to attend the orientation. To reiterate what we discussed: school starts at 8:45 and ends at 3:00 pm. There is both a before care and after care program should you need addition hours. Please use the stairwell closest to the playground to enter the classroom. Remember to sign in upon arrival and out at dismissal. We will spend a majority of our first week getting to know each other and going over expectations and usage of materials in the classroom. The first week of school will include asking you to set up a homework spot at home where your child can establish the place and the habit of doing homework. The homework is not as important as establishing good study habits
We will spend time both in the morning and in the afternoon outside so remember to dress appropriately and wear proper footwear. Each student should have a backpack and a folder for their belongings and school work. They have selected a cubby and will store those items plus their lunch/snack bags there as well. I have asked for a spare set of clothing to remain at school in the event of a clothing emergency: a pair of leggings/sweat pants, a long sleeve tee and socks please. Label clothing and place in a large zip-lock bag with your child’s name.
I encourage students to drink water during the day, so please send in a refillable bottle with them daily. We can refill as needed from the Britta in the kitchen. If you have signed up for hot lunch, please send a snack for the afternoon. Otherwise send in a good lunch packed with the appropriate amount of food for your child and an afternoon snack.
Curriculum the first week will center on a “getting to know you” theme. I have selected some of my favorite activities to share that will encourage the students to talk about themselves. I enjoy building classroom community and making sure we all feel welcome, safe, and comfortable.
I am looking forward to having an amazing year. Don’t hesitate to send in notes or ask questions if there is something you feel I need to know or you would like to know. Again, welcome to kindergarten.
